NHS trust mulls ban on Crocs

    Posted on 05/09/2007

An NHS trust has concerns over the safety of Crocs shoes in hospitals, it has emerged.

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is reported to be considering a ban on the colourful footwear because it does not conform to the Trust's dress code. However, the shoes have become popular among hospital staff, who say that their design makes them easy to clean.

The criticism follows reports of incidents elsewhere. In April a hospital in Sweden banned the shoes, known locally as 'Foppatoffels' after the ice hockey legend who imports them into the country. There had been reports of incidents where staff wearing them built up static electricity that had damaged medical equipment.

According to BBC News, the Sheffield trust denies that the possible ban is due to the problems reported in Scandinavia. A spokesperson told the corporation that staff were “expected to uphold a dress code, which was in place to prevent infection, maintain health and safety and keep a 'professional image'.”

Under the code, shoes should be black, low-heeled, soft-soled and supportive.
