Medical insurance cancer guidelines 'bring much needed clarity'
New guidance published today by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) will bring 'much needed clarity' to people choosing private medical insurance, according to a cancer charity.
The revised guidance comprises updated definitions for the medical terms used in all private medical insurance (PMI) policy documents and information. It also introduces guidelines to explain PMI cover for cancer.
Charity Cancerbackup was among the groups consulted by the ABI when preparing the guidelines. Its chief executive Joanne Rule welcomed the guidance, and praised the 'strong' insurance industry response.
'Common definitions will bring much needed clarity to people purchasing PMI and allow them to make better informed decisions about the kind of cover they want, and the treatments which would be covered if they were diagnosed with cancer,' she added.
'Cancer is a complex disease that does not always fit into the standard categories of 'acute' or 'chronic' illnesses,' said ABI director of general insurance and health Nick Starling.
'We hope that the new definitions will improve people's understanding of PMI and encourage more people to take it out.'
