Lord Darzi: 'Innovation and partnership' key to NHS future
Local staff must be given more of a say in the running of the NHS, according to preliminary findings by health minister Professor Sir Ara Darzi.
Lord Darzi, who is also a practising surgeon, has today released his interim report on the ongoing review of the NHS, 'our NHS, our future'. In it, he calls for greater influence to be placed in the hands of local NHS staff.
Launching his report, Lord Darzi said: 'This is not about imposing more change from the centre. Effective change needs to be led locally, driven by clinicians and others working in partnership across the service.'
He also announced the immediate creation of a new Health Innovation Council. Jointly funded and administered by the NHS and charity the Wellcome Trust, the council is tasked with helping the NHS develop new medical devices and diagnostics.
The British Medical Association (BMA) has welcomed Lord Darzi's report. 'Consultants as leaders and innovators in healthcare delivery will welcome the change of focus towards high quality patient-centred care,' commented Dr Jonathan Fielden, chairman of the BMA's consultants committee.
'However, it is vital that this change in language at the centre translates into practical freedom for clinicians on the ground, so they can work with patients to make the NHS a truly world class service,' he added.
