    DIY liver test launched

    Posted on 30/10/2007

Those concerned about the state of their liver can now obtain test results without visiting their GP.

The new LiverCheck service, which costs £99, allows users to send away a small amount of blood for analysis. YorkTest, the firm behind the new service, promises to return laboratory results and tailored advice within 10 days.

Helping launch the product, liver expert Dr Rajiv Jalan of University College London commented: 'There is no doubt in my mind that it will save lives. If someone knew they were going to get liver disease, they would do something about it. LiverCheck could avoid them getting to the stage where they are doing themselves real harm.'

The British Liver Trust has given a cautious welcome to the home tests, though it warned that they could not give the rounded appraisal of health offered by a GP.

Spokesperson Professor Humphrey Hodgson said: 'The last thing we want is the promotion of a false sense of security which results in people drinking at hazardous and harmful levels.'
