Breast cancer spread 'stopped by cannabis compound'
A compound found in cannabis may help to stop breast cancer spreading throughout the body, according to a study by scientists at the California Pacific Medical Centre Research Institute (CPMCRI).
The study, published in the latest issue of the journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, examines the effect of cannabidiol, or CBD – a compound found in cannabis which also appears to relieve convulsion, inflammation, anxiety and nausea.
The scientists are hopeful that cannabidiol may be the first non-toxic agent to treat metastatic forms of breast cancer.
Lead author of the study Sean D. McAllister, PhD, said that current treatments for breast cancer 'can be effective but they can also be extremely toxic and difficult for patients.'
'This compound offers the hope of a non-toxic therapy that could achieve the same results without any of the painful side effects,' he added.
However, the researchers stressed that it was 'highly unlikely' that effective concentrations of cannabidiol could be obtained through smoking the drug.
