Simple measures 'highly effective' at preventing spread of flu
Physical barriers may be more effective than drugs to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, according to a review of research.
The review, led by Bond University in Australia, shows how barriers such as hand-washing and wearing gloves, masks and gowns may be the most effective way to tackle viruses such as influenza and SARS.
Scientists looked at 51 previously published studies to compile the review, which was published in the online edition of the British Medical Journal (BMJ).
Last week, the government announced plans to double its stockpile of antiviral drugs in preparation for a flu pandemic.
However, the authors of the new report argue that simple, low-cost physical measures should be given higher priority in pandemic preparation.
In an editorial in the BMJ, Dr Martin Dawes said: 'Governments should continue to fund research to confirm the findings of this review and to investigate other areas of uncertainty that it identifies in the management of people with suspected influenza.'
