Stay Healthy this Halloween
Staying warm: Any costume you put together should be able to keep you warm throughout the evening, particularly for kids so that their evening isn't spoiled by goosebumps! If your outfit doesn't cover the arms, shoulders or legs, consider picking up thermals in the same shade as your skin to make sure your hard work doesn't go unnoticed.
Skincare: If you or your children want to use make-up or facepaints, always test a little of it on the skin the day before to make sure there's no allergic reaction. You should do this even if there has been no problem before.
Props: Any props such as swords, wands and other accessories should be short and flexible to prevent any accidents. Masks should have no blocked vision, so that you can still navigate your way around outside when it gets dark.
Exploring the neighbourhood: Young children may be more excited and boisterous, so it's important to keep an eye on them and make them aware that the same rules of the road still apply. All children should be accompanied by an adult while Trick-or-Treating, and you might find a first-aid kit helpful to take with you in case of any slips or scrapes.
Treats: Make sure any treats you accept are pre-wrapped and unopened, and try not to accept homemade treats, as you have no guarantee of quality. It's also a good idea to help children ration their spoils after an evening of collecting sweets, to make sure they don't overload on sugar and make themselves ill!
Children: Like with Trick-or-Treating, make sure your child doesn't overindulge on the Halloween goodies - and don't forget to tell the party host if there are any allergies they should be aware of. Make sure the family has a tasty, nutritious meal before heading to the party, so that kids are less likely to eat lots when they get there. You should also find out if any of the children at the party are sick so that you can take proper precautions - as you would with any other children's party.
You: Halloween is a popular excuse for an office party, so make sure you're keeping yourself healthy if you're likely to be out for the evening. Make sure you have plenty of fruit and vegetables before you head out the door to really boost your immune system and give your body plenty of nutrients, and know your limits if you plan on drinking alcohol. The cold weather can tempt us to drink more, but you can become quite ill as a result of not feeling how cold it really is.
