Second opinion matters
At some point in your life you may have left an appointment feeling dissatisfied with a diagnosis or confused about the treatment that has been prescribed. This dissatisfaction could lead you to requesting a second or further opinion from another specialist so that you are more confident in the advice and information that has been given to you.
Sometimes this type of experience can leave you with feeling of being ‘fobbed off’, which can be an uncomfortable thing to tell your doctor. However it is important to consider the difference a second opinion can make, especially when it comes to diagnosing a serious health issue.
According to the Huffington Post* actress and wife to Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, recently attributed her early diagnosis of breast cancer to requesting a second opinion after her initial test showed no signs of the condition.
She said in a statement from the Huffington Post*: "I share this to educate others that a second opinion is critical to your health. You have nothing to lose if both opinions match up for the good, and everything to gain if something that was missed is found, which does happen."
Although legally you don’t have a ‘right’ to a second opinion you shouldn’t be afraid to ask for one! Dr Luisa Dillner from the Guardian** says that it may feel sneaky asking for a second opinion and it isn’t your legal right but most doctors or specialists will be more than happy to help you get one.
GP Dr Rodger Henderson from Netdoctor*** advises that when you do make an appointment for a second opinion it is important to think about and make a note of the following:
- What are your concerns?
- Why you feel that your concerns were not addressed in your initial appointment?
- What you feel the cause of your health problem may be?
- What are your expectations in regards to treatment?
Being prepared and putting a plan together of what to address for your second opinion will help to ensure that you are clearer in the diagnosis and the information on treatment to be given.
